Greetings from my weekend

What is that? Blue sky? Where have you been hiding? I have totally been missing the sunshine in SoCal. We've been hit with May Gray, the usual June Gloom and now we made it all the way through July with only a handful of sunny days. I feel depleted of energy and of warm summer sun. Saturday started with the gloomiest gray drizzle and my girlfriend and I made fun of the vacationers hauling their loads to the beach while we sipped hot coffee and trolled garage sales. We thought there was no way the thick marine layer would clear but it did. And, suddenly I have energy again... and a new cappuccino machine... and a pale green kimono.

Another Year Older

awesome

Bloody 'el! The years keep coming! Not that 31 is all that old, but there is something about aging that stresses me out. I've always been the Baby and darn it, I want to stay that way. Ha. Regardless of the fact that I have landed in my thirties now, I had a great birthday weekend. Thomas and I went to Coronado Island for the day and had fun time exploring the little town. We walked to the beach and all around the Hotel del Coronado. Then we had a tasty lunch and a glass of champagne at a little outdoor café.

The next day we had some friends over for birthday dinner where Thomas made one of my all-time favorite meals, Beef with Red Wine and Pears. It's as good as it sounds, maybe even better. Yes, definitely better. Happy Birthday to me!

Raised Vegetable Garden, Part 3

Raised Vegetable Garden, Part 3
Getting soil and plant crops
See Part 1 here.

raised garden bed - soil time

Now comes the fun part, playing with dirt and planting seeds! We used a mix of garden soil, compost, peat moss and manure. The entire bed took about 36 cubic feet of this mix. We broke it down like this, 12 cf of garden soil, 12 cf of compost, 9 cf peat moss and 3 cf of manure. We layered about a third the different ingredients in the bed at a time and mixed them together with a garden fork. Once that was done I couldn't wait to get planting.

new plants in our new vegetable garden

We bought some small plants that were already started. Things like tomatoes, bell peppers and broccoli. The rest of the crop we started from seed. Our final planting consisted of eggplants, scallions, spinach, hot peppers, three varieties of tomatoes, green bell peppers and four heads of broccoli. I can't wait to see the crops start sprouting and flowering!
